Dry Studios is a multidisciplinary practice in Stockholm, Sweden, founded by Art Directors Jenny Kästel Tavassoli & Johan Fredlund. The Studio focuses on interiors, furniture, objects, and graphic prints.

Alongside their own collection, Dry Studios also collaborates with Frama Cph and carries a wide selection of products displayed in a dedicated space for the Danish brand.

In close collaboration with Dry Studios, the photographer Mike Karlsson Lundgren and the interior stylist Sophia Bratt have created a serene series of images inspired by light and compositions of former nordic paintings.

LV: What triggered the idea to launch DRY Studios, and how did the project come to life?

DS: We are both Art Directors, and we started working together 15 years ago. Working together was easy, and we discussed what we could do besides the more traditional agency set-up. What would inspire us and make us evolve even more? It came naturally to work as a smaller creative team with an ambition to create objects, interiors, graphic design, and concepts. Things we are passionate about. We started DRY Creative projects in 2011. In spring 2012, we moved to our current location in Vasastan in Stockholm, and from there, DRY Studios came to life. The space and the idea to create more freely allowed us to explore and evolve together with people that share the same beliefs.

LV: Does living in Stockholm play any role or have any impact on your creative process?

DS: Yes and No. We get inspiration from travels and embrace an aesthetic that is more international than Scandinavian. Still, since we are from Sweden and live in Stockholm, of course, the surroundings inspire us as well. Colors, architecture, culture, etc. We could say that we are a creative design studio with an international take on Scandinavian aesthetics.

LV: Do you follow guidelines, rules, or principles when deciding on which product(s) you will be developing next?

DS: One rule may be – that it should be something we like and want for ourselves. Our ambition is to produce in our workshop here in Stockholm and to engage other suppliers as locally as possible. We work with materials that last and even gain character over time.

LV: Which artist(s) (either from past or present times) have captivated or influenced you the most in your life?

DS: If we should choose some, we really like the expression of Cy Twombly, John Lautner, and studio Mumbai architects.

LV: If you could gift up to 3 books to someone you like, for him/her to understand better your values, which books would they be?

DS: Really hard to narrow it down to 3. We'll choose "The end of the game" by Peter Beard, Henry David Thoreau's "Walden", and "First Principles of Typography" by Stanley Morison.

LV: Are there any upcoming projects, events, or news from DRY Studios that you would like to share?

DS: Next year we will start a collaboration for doing more projects around interiors. Interior design and concepts for restaurants, hotels, and stores. We are also going to launch a new cabinet in February during Stockholm's Design Week.
