Kallol Datta & Paul Matter to Collaborate on a Lighting Collection: Overlay & Underlay
Overlay & Underlay is a collection of lights born from a collaboration with clothes maker, Kallol Datta, and designer Paul Matter. The collaboration explores different approaches to lighting design, blending the traditional and the experimental, form and function, the detail and the benign. The collection is composed of a ceiling pendant, a floor lamp and limited edition light objects. Starting with the idea of drafting a pattern on paper for a garment with free owing 3 dimensional folds, and stopping these fabric folds with metal, Kallol Datta, created a series of light objects that fuses sculptural form with hand worn materials. All the lights are completely handcrafted in beaten and casted metal bringing industrial uniqueness to each object. The appearance of surfaces and textures on objects and materials are manually achieved with ancient techniques such as patina and burning. This is the first of Paul Matter’s One of a Kind series of design collaborations with some of the most exciting designers working today.
