Set amongst towering pin oak and golden elm trees, this new build in Ivanhoe East, Australia, is reminiscent of the brutalist / mid-century architectural period with significant cantilevered concrete levels and extended eaves.

The bold, angular architecture is softened with beautiful landscaping and finishes, including the original cobblestone driveway and retaining walls that have been reinstated. Elegant timber cladding that extends from inside-out also provides relief. Flanking the impressive entry, the dark timber stain creates a subtle, warm bronze hue. This tone is also picked up in the bronze fleck throughout the custom cut “Elegant Grey” marble flooring, which again extends from inside to out.

The level of design detail undertaken by Mim Design throughout the home is evident, allowing DX Architects’ external design to connect seamlessly. From the entry, the next spectacular statement, that unveils itself in the formal living, is the grand helical staircase. A juxtaposition to the angular form of the home, it works so well, by creating softness and smoothness in the space. The large curved void over the formal living and connected off the stair, allows uninterrupted views of the magnificent pin oak tree to feel like an elevated treehouse experience. The stair is finished in white polished plaster to capture and reflect the filtered light that stipples through the trees. Mim Design worked closely with the owner builder client on selecting the finishes internally and externally to ensure it was a holistic approach.

The clever planning utilizes all the spaces exceptionally well. From private parents retreat at the front of the home to the hidden doors off the hall leading to the kitchen that provides discreet access into the laundry and butler’s pantry. All sightlines throughout the home unveil uninterrupted views of the beautiful leafy landscaping, carefully curated by Marnie Lewis Design.

The home office, secluded upstairs at the back of the property, is fronted with bookshelves rather than a wall, with frosted glazing, keeping it private while allowing a beautiful view over the pool and natural light to filter in. The upstairs further includes a bedroom wing for two teenage daughters, with beautifully matching ensuites, with ample light via skylights as well as incredible views into those remarkable trees. Mim Design’s final stage of furniture and art selection marries all of the form and function of the home together, finishing off a beautifully handcrafted home.
